About the Hotel
Built in 1968, the Iraklion Hotel stands on Kalokairinou Street in the historic core of Heraklion, one of the main arteries running through the old city. The hotel has a coffee shop, bar/lounge, and snack bar, and prides itself on sourcing local Cretan produce — a nod to the island's UNESCO-recognised dietary heritage. Locally-organised tours and activities are available directly from the property.
Heraklion's principal sights are all within easy reach: the Heraklion Archaeological Museum with its Minoan frescoes and artefacts from Knossos, the Koules Venetian fortress at the harbour mouth, the Morosini fountain and Lions Square (Liontaria), and the Agios Markos Basilica with its Venetian-era facade. The writer Nikos Kazantzakis is buried on the Martinengo Bastion, a short walk from the hotel. Day trips to the Palace of Knossos, which Sir Arthur Evans brought to light over a century ago, are easily arranged from the city.
