Sweden
Uppsala, Sweden's fourth-largest city and home to Scandinavia's oldest university (founded 1477), has a sauna scene shaped by its student population and the Fyris River. Fyrishov leisure centre is the flagship sauna complex — a full wet-area landscape with Finnish and steam saunas and cold plunge. Uppsala sits at the northern end of Lake Mälaren's archipelago, providing summer sauna boat access to island bastus. Swedish etiquette throughout: swimwear in mixed sessions, sessions longer and quieter than Norwegian equivalents. The city's strong cycling culture makes venues highly accessible without a car.
Fyrishov leisure and sports complex is the main public sauna facility — one of the largest in Sweden. Hotel saunas at Clarion Hotel Gillet and Quality Hotel Vår Gård cover the hotel tier. Stockholm's full sauna scene is 70 km south.
The Fyrisån river runs through central Uppsala and is used for seasonal bathing. Several operators near the river run wood-fired barrel sauna sessions with river cold-plunge access in summer.
More the reverse — Uppsala residents day-trip to Stockholm's Centralbadet or Yasuragi for premium sauna. Uppsala's own Fyrishov is well-regarded but Stockholm has substantially better options.
The city has university-town traditions around student sports and wellness. Sweden's oldest university (1477) context gives Uppsala a culturally distinct feel, but purpose-built sauna heritage is modest compared to Helsinki or Tampere.
