Puumala is a small island municipality in South Savo, at the narrowest crossing of Lake Saimaa connected to the mainland by ferry. The Saimaa Archipelago here — a labyrinth of bays, channels, and islands — provides some of the most scenic private sauna cabin settings in Finland. Smoke saunas on lake islands, accessible only by boat, represent the traditional Finnish sauna experience at close to its purest form. Puumala's small permanent population and extensive lake tourism infrastructure means sauna cabins are available for hire throughout the season. Finnish wilderness etiquette: wood-fired, löyly, cold water, silence.
Puumala is a small municipality on Lake Saimaa, surrounded by the world's largest lake-island system. Cottage saunas with jetty access on Saimaa islands are the defining offer — genuinely remote, water-surrounded, and quiet.
The summer ferry from Savonlinna to Puumala (45 min) runs in season. For island cottage saunas, own transport or boat rental is necessary. Most visitors come with a private cottage booking.
Saimaa's shallow bays reach 22–24°C in mid-July — exceptionally warm for Finland. In winter the lake freezes and ice swimming is maintained at inhabited island sites.
